Properties of LPG
LPG is a flammable, colorless, and strongly odorous gas that is about 1.5 times heavier than air. In the LPG cylinder, it is in liquid form. LPG is not toxic, but in high concentrations it is suffocating.
LPG has a high energy content. When LPG is ignited, a lot of heat energy is released from a mixture of LPG and air or oxygen. The ignition limits in the air at atmospheric pressure are 2-10 vol.-%. The necessary ignition energy is small, and sparks from electrical appliances can ignite a LPG-air mixture. Sparks must be removed by adequate earthing of LPG equipment and buildings, and by choosing electrical appliances with Ex-protection suitable for LPG.
- ● LPG cylinders should be stored in well-ventilated areas, upright with the valve up. They should not be stored in basements, near walkways or under stairs. The highest allowable storage temperature is +40°C. Only up to 25 kg of LPG may be stored in residential areas. Fire and smoking is strictly prohibited in the storage space.
- ● The cylinder must always be used in an upright position (not for motor fuel), so that the LPG comes out of the cylinder as gas. Since LPG consumes large amounts of oxygen when burning in air, adequate ventilation must be ensured and ventilation openings must not be blocked.
- ● If the cylinder leaks, avoid contact with the escaping gas, smoking or using electrical switches, and close the valve on the cylinder if possible. If the cylinder valve cannot be closed, move the cylinder preferably to an outdoor area far away from all ignition sources and allow the pressure to release from the cylinder.
